La Mata is the northern coastal district of Torrevieja, with the longest beach in the municipality and an old watchtower by the sea. It is about a 15 minute drive from Lago Rosa Apartment.
Playa de La Mata is more than two kilometres long, the largest beach in Torrevieja. Part of the dunes has survived, and boardwalks take you straight to the water. There are lifeguards, beach bars, sunbed hire and water sports, and one section is adapted for people with limited mobility. The beach holds a Blue Flag.
On Plaza del Embarcadero stands the round Torre de La Mata. It once kept watch over the salt works and the old jetty where the salt was loaded, and you can still see the remains of that quay. The square also makes a good start for a walk along the seafront path.
Inland lies the Laguna de La Mata, which forms a nature park together with the Laguna de Torrevieja. People walk and cycle beside the water here, and there are lookout points for birds. That makes it easy to pair a morning by the sea with some time in nature.
Wednesday market
Our tip: every Wednesday morning there is a market here, with clothes, fruit, olives and bargains, around Avenida de Francia and close to the sea.
Visitor centre
The nature park's centre is 400 metres from the N-332 at kilometre 64.5. Ask there about routes and birdwatching spots.
