San Miguel de Salinas is a small hill village between the salt lakes and the Sierra de Escalona, with a windmill viewpoint and cave homes. It is about a 10 minute drive from Lago Rosa Apartment.
You come here for an hour or two of Spanish village life and for the view. The Molino del Marqués, an old round stone windmill, stands on a high point and now serves as a lookout. Only the millstones survive of the Molino de la Tía Pelá, but that makes it a pleasant goal for a stroll round the area.
Around Barrio Primero de Mayo and Calle Zenia you can see the casas-cueva, cave homes carved into the rock in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This is no open-air museum but an ordinary neighbourhood, so walk through quietly and look without disturbing anyone. On your walk through the centre, take in the Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel.
Nature lies on two sides here. The Parque Natural de las Lagunas de la Mata y Torrevieja is easy to reach, and in the other direction is the Sierra de Escalona with the Dehesa de Campoamor.
