The Real Casino de Murcia is a historic club building on Calle Trapería, with grand rooms you can visit, and it is about a 50 minute drive from Lago Rosa Apartment.
Do not be misled by the name: there is no gambling here. This is a gentlemen's club, founded on 11 June 1847, which still has more than 1,600 members. The building grew in stages, with the eclectic façade on Calle Trapería arriving in 1902, and has been protected since 1983. After a thorough restoration from 2006 to 2009, King Juan Carlos I granted it the title Real.
Inside, one surprise follows another. The Arab Courtyard is decorated with more than 35,000 sheets of gold leaf and a starry glass dome. Then come the central gallery under a glass roof, the English library with about 20,000 books and the Pompeian Courtyard. Most lavish of all is the ballroom of 1870 to 1875, with Baccarat chandeliers and a ceiling full of exotic landscapes.
Our tip: dress neatly
The Casino expects smart clothing, with no tracksuits or trainers. So leave the flip-flops in the car.
Sit down for a while
The restaurant and the members' and terrace area are part of the building too. Ask on site what is open to visitors.
Combine it
It is on Calle Trapería, the shopping street between the cathedral and Plaza de Santo Domingo, so you can walk past all three.
