Murcia Cathedral is the great church on Plaza Cardenal Belluga, with a baroque façade and a bell tower you can climb, and it is about a 50 minute drive from Lago Rosa Apartment.
Pause on the square first. The façade is 54 metres high, built between 1737 and 1751 by Jaime Bort, and designed as a kind of stone altarpiece with twenty sculptures. Behind it the building is much older: the Gothic Door of the Apostles dates from the fifteenth century, and the fourteenth-century cloister is the oldest surviving part.
The Vélez Chapel, finished in 1507, is the most famous. It has a ceiling with a ten-pointed star and has been a national monument since 1928. In the museum you can see work by Francisco Salzillo among others, and through a glass floor you look down on the foundations of the former great mosque.
The tower went up in stages, from Renaissance through Baroque to Neoclassical. You climb past the clock room and a balcony to the top, which the cathedral says offers one of the best views of Murcia.
Our tip: then sit down
Afterwards grab a terrace on Plaza de Santo Domingo, which is full of restaurants. It is only a short walk from there.
