- Sight
Monteagudo is a striking rock with a medieval castle and a large statue of Christ, just outside Murcia, and it is about a 45 minute drive from Lago Rosa Apartment.
You can see it from far off: a bare rock 149 metres high above the green huerta, topped by a castle and a white statue of Christ. The oldest remains of the watchtower date from the eleventh century, and its present form from the twelfth, when the Wolf King Ibn Mardanish ruled the area. After 1243 Alfonso X made it his residence here, and it stayed an important fortress into the fourteenth century.
The statue of Christ arrived in 1951, replacing one of 1929 destroyed during the Civil War. Worth knowing: the castle and statue are not open to the public. A viewpoint stands halfway up the hill, and that will have to do.
At the foot, the visitor centre tells the story with remains, models and dioramas. Walks start from there as well.
Our tip: walk the route
The circular walk of about six kilometres takes around two hours and passes the castle, the Castillejo and Larache fort, with about 60 metres of climbing.
Visitor centre
It is free, closed on Mondays and open only in the morning on Sundays. Do check this before you drive over.
Combine with Murcia
The centre is about five kilometres away. On a day in Murcia, this is a good stop before or after the city.
