- Town
Orihuela is a monumental town on the Segura with a cathedral, a convent and a palm grove. It is about a 30 minute drive from Lago Rosa Apartment.
The coast belongs to the same municipality, but the town itself is another world. Here you can see what the Vega Baja was before beach tourism came. Start at the Iglesia Catedral del Salvador y Santa María, where Gothic and Renaissance meet, then walk on to the Convento de Santo Domingo. This convent combines Renaissance, Baroque and Mannerist features. The Palacio Episcopal is nearby.
The best-known local is the poet Miguel Hernández, and the Casa Museo de Miguel Hernández is dedicated to him. The tourist board recommends it, so put it on your list.
Above the town on Monte San Miguel stands the Castillo-Alcazaba, and on the edge lies the Palmeral de San Antón, an old palm grove. The town is at its most impressive during Semana Santa, with La Diablesa, a figure carried in the procession, and the 16th century Canto de la Pasión. The Museo Arqueológico Comarcal also pays attention to this.
Tuesday market
