Guardamar del Segura is a coastal town where the Segura reaches the sea, with eleven kilometres of beach and pine-covered dunes. It is about a 25 minute drive from Lago Rosa Apartment.
What sets Guardamar apart from the rest of this coast is the forest behind the beach. The Pinada covers some 800 hectares of pines, palms, cypresses and eucalyptus, on a dune system known as the most important on the Mediterranean coast. Walk here on a warm day and you have shade almost to the sea. In town are the Alfonso XIII and Reina Sofía parks, also laid out among the old dunes.
History goes back a long way here. The Rábita Califal is an almost complete Islamic monastic complex with 23 cells, and La Fonteta was a walled Phoenician port town. The Museo Arqueológico tells the story, although the most famous find, the Dama de Guardamar, is now in the MARQ in Alicante. From the castle above the town you can look out over all of it.
In the harbour at the mouth of the Segura, the Gola, the fresh fish is auctioned in the morning.
Our tip: Lemon Tree Market
Every Sunday morning, outside town near El Raso. A huge market with many stalls, terraces, food from different countries and fruit and vegetables at the back. Good for a few hours of wandering. Finding a parking space can take a while.
Wednesday market
There is also a Wednesday morning market in town, in the La Redonda car park.
Tourist office
