Cuevas del Rodeo, Rojales
- Driving time
- About 20 minutes by car
- Area
- Vega Baja
- Sight
The Cuevas del Rodeo are historic cave houses in Rojales, now used as workshops and exhibition space, and they are about a 20 minute drive from Lago Rosa Apartment.
Miners who moved to Rojales dug homes into this hillside between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. Since 1994 craftspeople and artists have worked in the restored caves, and the whole place acts as a kind of open-air museum of underground living.
You will recognise the lane by its whitewashed fronts with blue-painted door and window frames. Inside are workshops, changing exhibitions, a collection on the history of the caves and the zoco, where you can buy handmade things. From the higher paths you look out over the Vega Baja landscape. It is all small scale, so an hour is enough.
Our tip: the first Sunday
There is an art market with live music and crafts on the first Sunday of the month, which is the nicest time to go.
On weekdays
The caves are open during the day on weekdays, and the Rojales tourist office can arrange other visits. For current times, see the town's website, rojales.es.
Make a round of it
The shell house is just around the corner. Down in the town you will find the old waterworks with bridge, noria and weir.
