The Roman theatre of Cartagena is a large ancient theatre in the middle of the old town, with a museum by Rafael Moneo, and it is about a 40 minute drive from Lago Rosa Apartment.
For centuries this theatre lay hidden under houses. It only emerged during building work in 1988, and after years of excavation the museum opened in 2008. The theatre dates from about 5 to 1 BC, in the time of Emperor Augustus, and held around 6,000 spectators. The townspeople later built their old cathedral, Santa María la Vieja, on top of it, and you can still see its ruin above.
The way in is the best part. Architect Rafael Moneo linked the Palacio Riquelme and the old church into one route: you start on Plaza del Ayuntamiento, walk through the rooms of finds and suddenly emerge on the seating. The theatre itself is the largest piece in the collection.
Our tip: the city's highlight
We would start here if you have a day in Cartagena. The town hall is close by, and from there you walk straight into Calle Mayor.
