Barrio Santa Cruz is Alicante's old whitewashed quarter on the slope below the castle, and it is about a 55 minute drive from Lago Rosa Apartment.

According to the city's tourist office, this is the most picturesque part of Alicante, and after the first few lanes you will see why. Narrow streets of white houses climb Mount Benacantil, their walls full of colourful pots and flowers. You can only get here on foot, and it is steep: for anyone unsteady on their feet it is a real climb.

At the top stands the Ermita de Santa Cruz, built on the remains of a mosque. It was consecrated for Catholic worship in 1271, after Alfonso X took the city. The present building dates from 1830. From the viewpoint beside the hermitage you look over the old town, the port and the Mediterranean, at its best towards sunset.

Holy Week is special here: the procession that starts at the hermitage is recognised as an event of national tourist interest.

Our tip: good shoes

Wear shoes with some grip and take your time. The steep lanes and steps ask more of you than you might think.

Pair it with the castle

The walking route from the town hall to the Castillo de Santa Bárbara passes through the old town, so you can do them together.

Coming by bus

The Turibus stops at Alfonso El Sabio and Rambla Méndez Núñez, and line L5 runs to Puerta del Mar. From there it is uphill.
